چکیده

We measure momentum transferred from a single pulse of a standing wave of light to a sample of ultracold sodium atoms, and observe a sharp increase in the momentum transfer when the pulse duration exceeds a critical value tcr . A classical analysis of nonlinear resonances shows that resonance overlap occurs at tcr , and there is a transition to global classical chaos. These results are a direct experimental test of the “resonance overlap criteria” and illustrate that even the turning on and off of a simple spatially periodic interaction can lead to surprising and novel results.

An experimental realization of the quantum δ-kicked rotor

We study experimentally quantum effects in atomic motion for a classically chaotic regime. A standing wave is pulsed on periodically in time, and the resulting atomic momentum is measured. Momentum grows diffusively until the quantum break time, after which dynamical localization is observed. Quantum resonances are observed for certain pulse durations.

Atoms in an amplitude-modulated standing wave - dynamics and pathways to quantum chaos

Cold rubidium atoms are subjected to an amplitude-modulated far-detuned standing wave of light to form a quantum-driven pendulum. Here we discuss the dynamics of these atoms. Phase space resonances and chaotic transients of the system exhibit dynamics which can be useful in many atom optics applications as they can be utilized as means for phase space state preparation. We explain the occurrenc...

Nonlinear coherent dynamics of an atom in an optical lattice

We consider a simple model of lossless interaction between a two-level single atom and a standing-wave single-mode laser field which creates a one-dimensional optical lattice. Internal dynamics of the atom is governed by the laser field which is treated to be classical with a large number of photons. Center-of-mass classical atomic motion is governed by the optical potential and the internal at...

Relativistic ponderomotive force, Uphill acceleration, and transition to chaos.

Starting from a covariant cycle-averaged Lagrangian the relativistic oscillation center equation of motion of a point charge is deduced and analytical formulae for the ponderomotive force in a travelling wave of arbitrary strength are presented. It is further shown that the ponderomotive forces for transverse and longitudinal waves are different; in the latter, uphill acceleration can occur. In...

Attosecond light pulse induced photo-association

We explore stimulated photo-association in the context of attosecond pump-probe schemes of atomic matter. An attosecond pulse – the probe – is used to induce photo-association of an electronic wave packet which had been created before, typically with an attosecond pump pulse at an atomic center different from the one of photo-association. We will show that the electron absorption is maximal for...
